Haze Policy for Swimming Lessons in Singapore: Our PSI Action Plan for Parents
Dear Parents,
Your child's wellbeing comes first. During haze, we adjust swimming lessons at our western Singapore venues and keep you informed before you travel. This page explains exactly what happens at each PSI level, how we decide, and what you can do.
1. Activity status by 24-hour PSI
PSI 0–100 (Good / Moderate): Lessons proceed as normal.
PSI 101–200 (Unhealthy): Outdoor lessons proceed at reduced intensity, with extra rest breaks and less prolonged exertion. Indoor backup is offered where available.
PSI 201–300 (Very Unhealthy): Outdoor lessons are suspended. Indoor activities proceed only where indoor air quality is suitable, the venue permits use and coaches can keep exertion low. A roof alone does not ensure protection from haze.
PSI above 300 (Hazardous): All lessons and indoor alternatives are suspended.
These are Swim Masters' operating arrangements, aligned with National Environment Agency (NEA) and Sport Singapore advisories. Individual health needs may require additional precautions.
2. Our check every morning before class
We check NEA's 1-hour PM2.5 reading for the relevant area two hours before class, alongside the 24-hour PSI and prevailing advisories. The 1-hour reading reflects recent conditions; it is a separate measure from PSI. NEA's haze guide explains both.
We notify you via WhatsApp whether your lesson will proceed, change format or be suspended. We continue monitoring and message again if conditions worsen. Please check WhatsApp before leaving home.

3. Haze makeup credits
Any session cancelled because of haze, or that you choose to opt out of because of haze, becomes a makeup credit valid for 90 days from the affected lesson date. Please WhatsApp us to record your opt-out and arrange a makeup session.
4. Medical opt-out and hydration
Please let us know if your child has asthma, another heart or lung condition, feels unwell, or has been advised to avoid exercise. You may opt out and receive the same haze credit. Follow your child's doctor's advice.
Bring a filled water bottle and encourage regular drinking breaks. Tell the coach immediately if your child feels unwell.
5. Indoor alternatives
Where conditions and availability allow, we may offer dry-land technique practice, video analysis or private slots at indoor pools. We confirm the venue, format and availability via WhatsApp.
Frequently asked questions
Are swimming lessons cancelled when PSI is above 100?
Not automatically. At PSI 101–200, outdoor lessons continue at reduced intensity with more rest. Outdoor lessons are suspended at PSI 201–300 and everything is suspended above 300.
How will I know if my child's lesson is on?
We message your class WhatsApp group about two hours before the lesson after checking NEA's 1-hour PM2.5 reading for the area.
Do I lose the lesson if I keep my child home because of haze?
No. Haze-related absences become a makeup credit valid for 90 days. Just let us know on WhatsApp.
Thank you for helping us keep every swimmer comfortable and cared for.
